    Presenter: KATHY BASKE-YOUNG

Topic: THE COMPETENCY WHEEL: A DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE TOOL THAT CHANGES CONVERSATION

    Learning Objectives:

    • You’ll learn how to develop a competency wheel to have developmental two-way conversations with employees

    • You’ll learn how to use the wheel with employees to ensure expectations are understood, with ownership/responsibility for rating their own level of progression in each area.Supervisors will see how the tool can be used for coaching, succession planning and how to deliver empathic discussions for identified areas of improvement to foster success.

    • You’ll learn how to transform this same tool into a leadership wheel to focus on other dimensions critical to authentic and inspired leadership.

    • You’ll learn how to create a personal balance wheel and experience the power of looking at where you spend your energy and time now, and how to “budget” time in ways that align with what’s important (performance, professional growth, meeting goals, achieving mission success, and incorporating dimensions of personal life).

    Biography

Originally from Chicago, Kathy spent a number of years in television, working in Minneapolis, New York City, Norfolk, Raleigh and most recently as VP/Sales for the NBC owned and operated station in Washington D.C.  When she felt she was “fully cooked” in broadcasting, she embarked on a career as an Executive Coach, getting her ICF certification in 1999 and moving to Roanoke where she and her husband could enjoy the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and become involved in the community.

Kathy’s practice includes executive coaching for “leaders of leaders”, team coaching, and strategic planning and retreats.  She works in industries as diverse as manufacturing, healthcare, professional sports, high tech and advertising.

She currently serves as board chairman of Saint Francis Service Dogs, is on the United Way board, and is the past chair of the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce. She also served on the Virginia Governor’s Council on the Status of Women and has been a recipient of the YWCA of the Roanoke Valley Women of Achievement Award for Business.

As a side note, she is known for her sense of humor, her cooking mishaps and finally passing the test (with her lab Jackson) to be a Therapy Dog couple.
