    TOPIC: Compelling Business Rationale for LGBT

    During the past decade, LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people are being more fully accepted in society and are “out” and visible in the workplace.  This workshop will cover:

    • Why is this important?  The changing landscape of the workplace and marketplace.  Do we really need to talk about sexual orientation at work?  Includes an interactive exercise
    • Basic definitions around sexual orientation and gender identity / expression
    • The business case and rationale for supporting LGBT diversity
    • The many areas of LGBT inclusiveness that companies can be active in; Details of the “20 steps (programs) to LGBT workplace inclusion” 
    • A short introduction into the current area of transgender diversity – what is transgenderism and what HR policies and procedures are need to support these transgender employees
    • How to interact in a respectful manner with LGBT people… terms and words to use, etc.  “The five things to never say to LGBT people”

    Leaning Objectives:

    1. Understand the basic terms and definitions within the LGBT community.
    2. Be able to articulate the compelling business rationale for supporting LGBT diversity in the workplace, including calculating a financial business case.
    3. Understand the various programs and practices that can be executed as part of an LGBT diversity and inclusion program.
    4. Understand how to respectfully interact with LGBT people.

    Speaker's Bio

    Stan C. Kimer is recognized as an internal/external consultant with unique skills in employee development/career road mapping, workplace diversity (specialization in LGBT – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), and organization effectiveness/project management. 

    In his HR role within IBM, Stan served on IBM’s global diversity team as the global project manager for LGBT diversity.  During his five year tenure, Stan led IBM to premier leadership industry in LGBT diversity, including winning all 5 key marketplace LGBT diversity awards, expanding IBM’s LGBT initiative worldwide, and developing IBM’s first transgender employee corporate policy. 

    Now as a consultant, Stan is a certified Out and Equal Workplace Advocates Building Bridges Trainer and a TMC (Training Management Corporation) / Berlitz Cultural Trainer - Practitioner. He is active in leadership roles in dozens of community and civic organizations including as Immediate Past President of the North Carolina Council of Churches.  In 2013, the Triangle Business Journal recognized Stan with one of their “Leaders in Diversity – role model” awards. Stan received his MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and BS in Management Science from Georgia Tech.

    In his spare time, Stan is training to be a competitive adult figure skater.

    Monthly Meetings are generally held the fourth Tuesday of the month.  We have both breakfast and lunch meetings during the year.  Please click on the specific meeting you are interested in for meeting times and location.

    CANCELLATION POLICY:

    Registration for Monthly Meetings will close at noon the day before the meeting.  Due to the costs involved with securing adequate meeting space and meals, refunds will not be granted if cancellation is not received at least 24 hours in advance. Send all cancellation notices via e-mail to rkevalshrm@gmail.com. Substitutions are allowed, however the non-member rate may apply.  If we do not receive a cancellation notice more than 24 hours before the event, you will be required to pay for the event, even if you are unable to attend.

    Members and guests who are unable to register in advance are invited to attend as a walk in and pay onsite.  We usually have a few extra seats to accommodate onsite registrations, but seating is not guaranteed and preregistration is encouraged.
