In more than a decade as the president of Virginia Western Community College, Dr. Robert H. Sandel has been the major driving force behind the college's exponential growth in enrollment, size and stature in the community. His emphasis has been on helping students achieve their educational goals, whether they plan to transfer to a four-year university or join the workforce. Dr. Sandel has implemented a robust fund-raising arm of the college to make college possible for all students regardless of financial situation, as well as upgraded buildings, equipment and technology across campus to ensure students acquire the most cutting-edge skills. He has also built a Workforce Development strategy that has resulted and deep ties between the college and the business community. Dr. Sandel has been a community college educator for more than 30 years, and was the president of Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap prior to joining Virginia Western. A South Carolina native, he earned his bachelor's degree from The Citadel, his master's degree from South Carolina State University and his doctorate from the University of South Carolina.
